some kind words.
“Producer Aaron Shafer-Haiss blends the powerfully atmospheric textures with a more straightforward instrumental approach that serves the truth-telling of the songs beautifully” - AllMusic
“The eleven-song collection is lush and cinematic” - NPR
“The production is slick, smooth and lush. The serenity of the music provides a perfect platform for the velvet expression of Michaela Anne’s lustrous voice highlighting just how exceptional it is.” - AmericanaUK
Writing a song is one of the most vulnerable forms of art you can create.
And then you have to sing it?! Understandably, making recordings of these songs can be nerve-racking. It can be hard to step back from them enough to know what is working or not, let alone trusting an outside person to bring your vision to life.
I don’t take this responsibility lightly - kind of like being a midwife or a doula of sorts for an artist’s songs. There are countless ways to compromise both vision and the joy of creating, I protect those above all.
I don’t have all the answers.
When you show up thinking you have all the answers you have blinders on, and inevitably miss all the magic moments. I’ve worked on enough records to know where to start, where the ditches are, and when we’ve taken a wrong turn, but the magic of a record lies in the exploration and happy accidents. I make room for them.
I am there to hold a speaker to your imagination.
Yea sure that sounds cheesy, but I view myself as a translator, an editor, and a motivator. I not only make sure your vision is fully realized, but that it is pushed as far as we can go. It is always your record. I am here in service.
Casting a record shouldn’t be overlooked.
It’s not just how you make the record, it’s who makes the record. I love thoughtful choosing and combining voices and musicians to fit exactly what each record needs to exceed it’s potential. After over a decade on the road and years spent in Brooklyn and Nashville studios I cherish my contact list of players all over, on every instrument, every sound, and every approach we could need.
The number one currency of a record is longevity.
You get this by leaning into each artist’s unique vision and voice, that’s how records stay fresh and relevant. Think Prince, The Talking Heads, Michael Jackson, The Beatles - we still listen to these records because they are so strongly them. Finding where that sound is hiding in every record is one of my favorite parts.
Not every story needs my input. The ones that do start with conneciton.
